Fire in a Riparian Shrub Community: Postburn Water Relations in the Tamarix-salix Association along the Lower Colorado River
نویسندگان
چکیده
Higher water potentials in recovering burned salt-cedar (Tamarix ramosissima) relative to unburned plants and the opposite situation in willow (Salix gooddingii) provide evi dence that postfire water stress is reduced in the former but not the latter. Similarly, diurnal patterns ofstomatal con duc(ance in these taxa are consistent with the existence of more vigor in burned salt-cedar than willow. Plots ofwater potential and transpiration demonstrate that hydraulic effi ciencies may contribute to differences in fire recovery.

Surface water and ground - water thresholds for maintaining Populus – Salix forests , San Pedro River , Arizona
Ground-water and surface Xow depletions are altering riparian ecosystems throughout the southwestern United States, and have contributed to the decline of forests of the pioneer trees Populus fremontii (Fremont cottonwood) and Salix gooddingii (Goodding willow). On some rivers, these forests have been replaced by shrublands of Tamarix ramosissima (tamarisk), a drought-tolerant species from Eura...

Significant ecological, hydrologic, and geomorphic changes have occurred during the 20th century along many large floodplain rivers in the American Southwest. Native Populus forests have declined, while the exotic Eurasian shrub, Tamarix, has proliferated and now dominates most floodplain ecosystems. Photographs from late 19th and early 20th centuries illustrate wide river channels with largely...

Sistan has recently confronted to periodic drought and water scarcity that destroyed vital resources especially vegetation. Information about reaction of the vegetation species to drought is necessary for protecting and biological restoring this ecosystem, so density of Tamarix aphylla, Salix babylonica and Eucalyptus were investigated using quadrates 50m × 50 m during wet (1366-1376) and droug...
متن کاملAn Empirical Algorithm for Estimating Agricultural and Riparian Evapotranspiration Using MODIS Enhanced Vegetation Index and Ground Measurements of ET. II. Application to the Lower Colorado River, U.S
Large quantities of water are consumed by irrigated crops and riparian vegetation in western U.S. irrigation districts. Remote sensing methods for estimating evaporative water losses by soil and vegetation (evapotranspiration, ET) over wide river stretches are needed to allocate water for agricultural and environmental needs. We used the Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI) from MODIS sensors on the...

Nevertheless, it is now present in pure communities or mixed with virtually all riparian community types, being absent only from a few stands of honey mesquite. Knowledge concerning those avian species ...
